Arusha is a vibrant city in northern Tanzania and one of the country’s most important gateways to the great safari destinations of East Africa. Set beneath the slopes of Mount Meru, the city combines a lively urban atmosphere with spectacular natural surroundings and provides a convenient starting point for exploring northern Tanzania. Known as a gateway to some of Tanzania’s most celebrated destinations, Arusha is closely connected with safari experiences in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tarangire and other northern wilderness areas. Beyond its role as a safari hub, the city offers its own cultural and natural attractions, with local markets, coffee-growing areas, cultural experiences and views of Mount Meru adding depth to a visit. Arusha’s location also makes it an ideal base for experiencing the region’s diverse landscapes. Within a short distance of the city, travelers can move from bustling streets and cultural surroundings into forests, crater landscapes, lakes and open savannah. Arusha National Park Just outside the city lies Arusha National Park, a compact but remarkably diverse protected area dominated by the dramatic Mount Meru. The park brings together montane forest, open grasslands, volcanic landscapes and the scenic Momella Lakes, creating a striking contrast of habitats within a relatively small area. Wildlife includes giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes and a variety of primates. The park is particularly notable for its black-and-white colobus monkeys and rich birdlife around the forests and Momella Lakes. Unlike many traditional safari destinations where the focus is primarily on game drives, Arusha National Park offers a wider range of ways to experience the landscape. Walking safaris provide an opportunity to explore the natural environment on foot, while canoeing on the Momella Lakes offers a different perspective of the park and its wildlife. The presence of Mount Meru gives the park much of its character. From forested slopes and volcanic scenery to peaceful lakes and open wildlife habitats, Arusha National Park offers a varied introduction to the natural beauty of northern Tanzania and complements the larger safari landscapes found farther north.
